BODHRÀN TUTOR BOOK / CD BY STEAFAN HANNIGAN

Learn to play the bodhrán with Steafan Hannigan as your teacher !

This excellent tutor book helps you to get started on the bodhrán and shows you how to hold the drum and tipper the right way.
It also explains how to work with the left hand to modulate the sound and gives a good oversight of the basic rhythms.
A demonstration CD is included !

My personal recommendation for self-teaching !

Eamon Murray (Beoga): “Together and in their own wonderful ways they have taken bodhrán playing to a dizzying new height around the globe. A fine pair of German Paddys! Now, sit back, put your feet up and let the lads do what they do best – show the drum who’s boss!"

Hedwitschak products are not available in conventional music shops.

But there are a few well-chosen representatives of my products who also have a few drums and tippers available to try out and purchase.

The Hedwitschak Partners distribute Hedwitschak drums and accessories either locally or via an online shop. They are all experienced players and can therefore give good adviceon buying the right drum. The partners have been familiar with all the Hedwitschak drum models and products for many years and are always up to date on the latest information on all Christian's products. This guarantees an excellent and expert service to the customer.
All partners offer bodhrán lessons!

The Hedwitschak Premium Partners are closely integrated in all development processes at our workshop.

They support the development of new drum and tipper models and the further development of existing products through their vast experience and their innovative approach.
The Hedwitschak Premium Partners are Rolf Wagels and Stephan Moises.

Rolf Wagels (Hannover) in the north of Germany and Stevie Moises (Puchheim) in the South of Germany, run Showrooms which stock all the Christian Hedwitschak drums and tippers available. Here the models can be tried and tested, and are also available to buy.

About the Hedwitschak Premium Partners:

Rolf Wagels
Rolf Wagels has been playing the bodhrán since 1993, and gathered a vast experience through performances in Europe and the US, working with the band Cara and also through teaching in Germany, Ireland and the US. He has taken part in many of the developments of Christian Hedwitschak (LL, BL 2.0 etc.) and has shaped the development of the bodhrán in the last 10 years with the co-production of the signature line RWE together with Christian. He was also heavily involved in the most recent developments o fHedwitschak bodhráns like the compressor tuning rim and the new CoreLine model. Since1999 he has operated the website http://www.bodhran-info.de which provides a lot of information about the bodhrán. In 2004 he integrated an onlineshop, including a consultation service, which has earned him more than 1,000 happy customers. The addition of an offline show room in 31535 Neustadt near Hannover is another improvement to the service provided by Rolf. In this showroom, not only does he offer the possibility to try out all bodhrán and tipper models from Christian Hedwitschak, but also individual guidance for players of all levels. Professional bodhrán players can avail of the opportunity to try out different microphone setups on different drums. Appointments by arrangement only.

Stevie Moises

Stevie Moises is a master wood turner and has been running his own business since 1988. He is one of the founding members of the world-renowned percussion manufacturer "TROYAN Drums" and has gathered extensive knowledge in the field of drum and instrument making.
Being a drummer and percussionist himself, Stevie has performed on many occasions in the company of excellent musicians, and needless to say, he’s always made his own drum sticks.
Meanwhile, the bodhrán has almost become Stevie’s instrument of choice, and he plays it in various bands supporting various kinds of music. Due to his musical career, his playing style is based on rock and funk.
Stevie Moises has produced all solid wood tippers and NewEffectTippers for Christian Hedwitschak since 2004, and was heavily involved in their development. He was also engaged in the production of the LightLine 1.0/2.0. Stevie also turns the concave frame for various Hedwitschak Bodhrán models.

He launched the production of HotRod tippers in his workshop in 2011. Stevie runs a website athttp://www.tippermaker.eu

where you can find interesting bits of information about the tippers and the production of custom-made tippers.

In his showroom in Puchheim, you can try out all Hedwitschak bodhrán and tipper models. Stevie provides players of all levels with individual advice and support, and will help you with all questions regarding bodhráns and tippers. He also offers lessons.
If you want to visit the showroom in Puchheim, please contact Stevie in advance to make sure the tea’s ready when you arrive! ;)

Details / Tuning

Written by

FRAMES

The frames of my bodhráns are made of native layered solid beech. After testing and trying many different woods I decided to stick with beech wood. Even my veneered and effect varnished frames have a center made of beech.

The only exception are the concave frames made of cherry wood and nut wood which are used for the MHTF, SR models and on demand for the custom made drums. These are slightly lighter than ones made from beech wood.

Tonally, the wood for the bodhran is not as important as it is for example for the violin. At bodhrán construction issues like the figuration of the bearing edge, the type of cross-cuts and profiles of the frames, the type and amount of structure-borne sound transmission, the type of wood lamination (layered wood or plywood), relation of diameter to depth and first of all the quality of the drum skins are much more important for the overall sound quality.

For the LightLine2.0 we use a purpose-built plywood frame for the exterior rim. These frames are less expensive than layered wood frames. For the parts that influence the sound of the drum, which are the tuning ring and the fitting frame, a high quality layered wood frame is used.

Lamellen

Layers of solid beech. The main frame will be made of three layers.

TUNING SYSTEMS

The accurate tuning of the bodhrán is just as well as important as a proper playing technique.
This does not mean primary to tune the drum to a specific basic tone, it is more important to get an equal tention all over the vibrating surface. If a nice, bassy, earthy tone can be heard on a free vibrating bodhrán (no hand on the skin) the drum is in fine tuning. Furthermore, an equal tone should be heard when hitting the drum skin all around the edge at approximately 1"-2" from the edge. The bass tone should have a warm sound character, an earty sound color and a nice post-pulse oscillation.
My drums are built to provide a huge sound spectrum without any efford. Please just make sure you don't cover too much of the playing surface with your upper part of the body. Same applies for left hand work: Only a lightest tough is necessary to change the tone.
In this case less is more: Less body contact to the drum and less playing effort provides more volume and fuller overall sound. Let the drum do the work ! :-)

Over the years I have developed and refined suitable tuning systems for different drums.
'Tuning system' means to me much more than just a screw pushing against a tuning ring. For me, a tuning system is a complex construction of matching components. Drum skin, bearing edge, frame parts and operating elements have to form a harmonious unit.
Not every skin makes sense on every frame/bearing edge. It has specific reasons why I use exclusively 'Standard skin' on the BasicLine, apply a thin leather strip on the bearing edge of the MHTF and work with a textile coating on the tuning ring of the MOF, and so on.

Especially with custom made bodhráns all components will be selected matched and fitted, right from the beginning. Optimal sound results and playing comfort will always be in the focus.

Even if the diverse tuning systems are operated slightly differently and also influence the exterior look of the drums in different ways, all of them have many things in common:

    1. All of them are tool-less. No tools are required to keep your instrument in perfect tuning - quick and comfortable, no matter where you are in the world.
    2. All of them are multipoint tuning systems. This means it is possible to tune differnet parts of the playing surface individually. In my opinion this is strictly necessary for natural drum skins. Sometimes only a single part of the drum skin detunes because of hand perspiration. If you once are used to proper tuned drums you will LOVE my tuning systems !
    3. All of them are smooth-running. All operating parts are easy to grip and even at very low skin tention the adjusters will not loosen unintentionally.
    4. All of them are reliable and proven over years. My tuning systems have a large tolerance space in both direction. This means the system works in all climates and conditions. Well, in nearly all ...for sauna use I would like to recommend the Synthetwitschak ;-)
    5. All of them have a high durability. Only the best quality material is used in all parts. The systems work without maintenance, but of course a drop of oil every now and then can work wonders.
    6. All of them provide a direct skin tension feedback. This means the amount of rotation resistance on the adjusters provide a straight feedback signal of the skin tension. The higher the skin tention on one specific area, the higher the rotation resistance on the appropriate tuner. Now tuning with intuition is just a question of sensitiveness and routine.
      Proper tuning made easy !

THE COMPRESSOR TUNING SYSTEM

In the years 2010/2011 we developed the so-called compressor tuning system in close cooperation with Rolf Wagels.
This is a relatively high, funnel shaped tuning ring which influences the overtones and the overall frequencies of the bodhrán in a positive way.The drums fitted with the compressor rim give a defined and dry sound which on the one hand makes recording and mixing easier and on the other hand allows the drum to cut through very well acoustically without being loud.

The funnel shaped compressor tuning rim

More details:
From now on the new compressor tuning system is available as an optional feature in all custom made drums and comes as a standard feature in the RolfWagelsEdition.
Resulting from detailed frequency analysis, audio comparison and feedback, professional players have confirmed that after an intensive year of development, this innovative tuning system is now ready for marketing.
The compressor tuning frame is a funnel shaped, relatively high tuning rim, which influences the overtones and the overall frequencies of the bodhrán in a positive way.
Drums fitted with the compressor rim show a more defined, clear and dry sound compared to a classical tuning system. So these drums can be heard better when mixed with other instruments without being loud or obtrusive.
The clear sound makes the compressor tuned drums your best choice for studio work and in an amplified live environment.
If you compare the structure of overtones to a classical bodhrán you will realize that the compressor frame provides a more regulated and a clearer structure. This means that the partial tones have a sharply bounded line and undefined overtone areas are often compressed to one defined overtone.
The two pictures below show a picture of the frequency analysis of a new RWE with a new skin (not played in). The picture on the top shows the results of the classic tuning system, the picture at the bottom is the result of the new compressor tuning system.
The curves represent the presence of the frequencies in the full tonal spectrum. The peaks representing the partial tones, means the basic tone and the overtones.
A defined tone has sharp and marked off peaks, whereas a noise has less to no peaks. Please compare the pictures of the drum analysis with the picture of the structure of overtones of a guitar to see how big the influence of the new rim can be.
The pictures here show analysis taken from free vibrating drums. More analyze pictures and information regarding other drum models, skins and different left-hand-techniques (free swinging, open, bass, mid, octave, pushed, high plopp) will be available as a pdf document soon.

Since all overtones are well structured it is easier to mix the drum either on stage or studio. Also, the bass is less boomy/roaring and better controlable.
Another advantage apart from the positive influence of the sound is more playing comfort. The funnel tuning rim gives the skin hand a nice rest, no screws are touched and so you get a comfortable and ergonomic place for your skin hand.
Also the way the tuning screws are fixed has changed from single tuning block to a wooden frame going all the way around the drum. This provides a solid fixation and professional look.

All compressor tuning system developments were accompanied and advised by Rolf Wagels.
He is so convinced about the new system that it will be standard in his signature line, the RolfWagelsEdition.

RWECompressorNeu

The new RWE bodhrán

In all custom made drums the new compressor rim is optional in two varieties: On the one side we offer the open star tuner knob known from the HighEndLine bodhráns and on the other side the hidden tuning wheels, known from LightLine, BasicLine, MOF and MHTF.
Surcharge is 35€ either way in the HighEndLines 37cm and 40cm. For smaller diameters we can offer the new tuning rim in the closed system only!
The flexibility of the tuning rim will be adjusted individually, according to the skin, diameter and number of tuning screws. To achieve this individual flexibility from super flexible to very stiff the tuning rim is milled on the outside (not visible in the finished drum!).
The new tuning rim can be fitted with or without leather/textile stripe underneath the drum skin.

Since the new compressor frame changes the tone in a significant way all, the classical HighEndLine tuning system is still available. Also the standard models like MOF, MHTF, MOS etc. will still have the classic tuning system as their standard.

Any model can be fitted with the new tuning rim though if the customer wishes to do so.
Please get in touch for individual advice if you are interested in a custom made bodhrán.

And here comes the feedback we got from Martin O`Neill who had the first MOF with compressor tuning system for a test drive:

I've been playing the drum loads and my overall impression is that mic'ed up the bottom end seems more controllable (i.e. Not so boomy),fairly even across the range…
...
One difference not sound related that I do prefer is the funnel shape of the tuning rim makes it more comfortable to play. Small thing, but does make a difference.
Martin O`Neill

The owner of the first compressor MOS 40cm (DRAGONSkin) sent us following lines:

...Due to general chaos I didn't really get a proper soundcheck as I would have liked...so didn't get a chance to let rip with the MOS compressor to see what it sounded like miked up, and the sound that was coming back through the stage monitor was pretty horrible too ! However I have had a lot of positive comments about how well the drum sounded at the concert including an unsolicited " You know, your drum sounded better tonight than it has ever done ", this latter from a friend I have played a lot with over the last few years with my MOS...and like most folk I know, he hasn't realised I was playing a different drum !
So obviously the difference in sound between the two drums is quite noticeable, even to a casual listener... so I am seriously impressed with the compressor design and my new MOScompressor !...
Paul Dorricott, U.K.

LEATHER STRIP ON BEARING EDGE

What´s the story about the soft leather strip underneath the drumskin ???

This leather strip works like a buffer zone. I makes the whole drum a bit less frail for de-tuning and allows the drum skin to swing out better in the edge area.
It also softens a bit the rim shot sound, takes away some ringing overtones and avoids a possibly squeaking of the skin.
Depending on drum model, skin and the desired sound, this leather strip is used in various thicknesses/qualities.
Some drum models are not equipped with this leather strip. A special coating or textile layer is then applied.

TAPING

What´s the story about the black tape around the edge of the drum ???
The tape helps to harmonize the overton beaviour or the drum sound and simply makes the overall sound more defined and "round".
Physically speaking, it dampens the radial vibration lines of the drum skin, while the circular lines are not affected.

Drumskins

Written by

As a bodhrán maker with over 10 years experience and having made more than 5000 bodhráns, carried out countless experiments with synthetic and natural skins from a variety of animals as well as a multiple and a combination of drum skins, I am now in a position to offer a comprehensive and selected program of drum skins for my bodhrán models. Especially natural skins on the other hand lend an inspired individualistic sound so inherent in all instruments made in our workshop.
Working natural skins in itself requires much experience, fingertip sensitivity and expertise, as goatskins are composed of 7 different structures each of which have different characteristics.
The only part of a goat that continues to live on for decades is the skin which is personally carefully selected for each individual requirement by me. I am always very aware that I am dealing with part of a living creature and therefore this work demands respectful handling.
The goatskins are sorted for their respective requirements, fleshed and cured according to an old well-proven traditional biological working process.
This environmentally-friendly work-procedure takes from two to three weeks. In comparison to the usual time spent on skin processing, the additional time given to our skin processing method ensures highest quality.

All drum skins specified here have one thing in common: they tend to sound better and better while being played in and the sound becomes more and more balanced.
I am constantly being asked about the subject of „Anthrax“. Indeed in recent years, some cases of Anthrax (splenic fever) have been reported. This has been caused by incorrect handling of skins. As far as I am aware, there have been import embargos for the import of skins in certain countries or at least very strict import regulations have been applied. This is further proof that in the final analysis, it`s not the price that counts but the quality, and this basically applies to all aspects of trade. This is especially relevant for such highly sensitive products as animal skins. This does not mean by any means that African goatskins are generally affected. However, I personally feel better working with skins of controlled origin.
Our drumskins are manufactured by an experienced tanner who places great emphasis on cleaniness. The company has been in the tanning industry for over 600 years. We use bodhran skins which come exclusively from Germany, Austria and Switzerland and mostly we use Swiss mountain goatskins. Each goat is registered with the appropriate authorities within 48 hours of birth. The animal is then ear-tagged, and is permanently checked by a vet. In this way, the authorities always know where the animal is being kept, as well as the age and state of its health. This assures that the origin of our bodhran skins can easily be traced and thus ensures highest quality skins. These procedures are of top priority for me and my tanner as we are the first people to come in contact with the animal skins and enables us to guarantee continuous top quality. As a result of these precautions, we have absolutely no hesitation in allowing our instruments to be used in kindergardens and schools.
The goatskins used by me have been produced exclusively according to my specifications.
We offer different processed skins for each of our bodhrán lines:

STANDARD SKIN

Our so-called 'Standard Skin' is our most universal skin. It was mostly used for the „LightLine" and „BasicLine" models (which are no longer in production since 4/2012). The 'Standard Skin is the basic product used for our DragonSkin and the new 'Edlauer Select' premium goat skin. It is environmentally-friendly produced, is flexible and offers a wide sound spectrum. In addition it tunes easily and likewise holds the tuning very well. As previously mentioned, it requires some playing-in time before acquiring a mature sound. Good progress can be detected after just a few days of playing. The positive characteristics of this skin are its reliability and longevity as there are no animal fats or chemical particals included. There is no danger of skin tear if used in a normal way. This is a drumskin of the highest standard in a high-quality finish.

The name "Standard skin" may sound perhaps a bit run-of-the-mill, but is exactly the opposite. I was thinking about changing this name, but finally decided to keep it, becaue it has already become common. In addition, the "standard" of Hedwitschak products is already very high anyway ;o)

EDLAUER SELECT

I am using drum skins made by Werner Edlauer exclusively for more than 10 years now. (The only exception is the Lambeg skin used for the RolfWagelsEdition). He is also the man behind the DRAGONSkin and with no doubt he is one of the best skin makers worldwide. Together, we developed special drum skins for my bodhráns over the last few years. The new Edlauer Select Premium drum skins are made especially for the CoreLine series. They are specially chosen goat skins and are produced in a unique way exclusively for Hedwitschak drums. I will then select the suitable skin areas for the given CoreLine model. Characteristics of the EdlauerSelect Premium skins are: Harmonious timbre, great flexibility, comfortable surface feel, easy reaction to the skin hand with effortless tonal modulation and stable tuning in almost any climate zone.
A premium drum skin for an outstanding bodhrán series.

DRAGONSKIN

In this case I am referring to a specially treated skin which is refined according to a special in-house treatment procedure. Only the most homogeneous and optically most attractive standard skins are selected for this purpose.
DRAGONSkin is a drum skin which has been well played-in from the very start but still has much more to offer. That special something extra which is difficult to describe in words. The sound-character can best be described as lively, harmonious with crystal-clear highs, a creamy mid-range tone and a full bass sound. It responds easily to the slightest touch of the skin hand and offers a very wide ranging sound spectrum. In comparison to the famous Lambeg skins from the North of Ireland, the attack is a bit softer.
DRAGONSkin is a copyright brand ! (TM)
After having worked on DRAGONSkins for over three years now, I have decided to differentiate more precisely between the skins and am now in a position to offer three distinct variations. The differences between the skins may be slight as the skin selection process is carried out meticulously and each skin dervies from a series of the same goatherd. However fundamental differences in sound and feeling do exist which should be of great interest especially to the more seasoned bodhran player.

DRAGONSkin classic: This is he standard DRAGONSkin model with a skin of of medium thickness and hardness. This ist he most popular and universally used HighEnd model with the typically creamy sound character. Even unexperienced players are well served with this model. Designed to suit from the session to the stage from „Long-and-slender-tippers" to “Hotrods”.

DRAGONSkin velvet: A "normal" DRAGONSkin-processing procedure. However, for this model we tend to use thinner and softer skins from younger animals. These skins have a softer feel thus reproducing a softer sound. Excellently suited for "bassline players" and to accompany the voice. Likewise suitable for spirituals and shamanic techniques.

DRAGONSkin spicy: Here we use thicker skins from older animals (3-7 years old). These are then sanded to medium thickness. This means that the portion of the harder outer skin layer is greater. In addition, the intensity of the DRAGONSkin procedure is shortened. The result is a DRAGONSkin with a harder attack, more punch even at louder sesions, but still with that creamy DRAGONSkin sound character. Maybe something more for the "topendstyle" player. Lucy Randall playing one of the very first DRAGONSkinspicy: Youtube.
Thanks to the Ausrian drum comapany beatfatory.at for permission to use the name "spicy" in this context!  Excellent Djembes and more drum accesoires: spicy instruments !

ORIGINAL "LAMBEG SKINS" FROM THE NORTH OF IRELAND

These skins are not produced by us, but made in the North of Ireland. We deal exclusively with two suppliers Frank Orr and Thomas Louden with whom we have been trading for years. Both partners are experts in their trade and are the some of the last in a line of producers of these renowned skins who work according to old tanning traditions.
The living legend on the bodhran Seamus O´Kane was the maker who made the Lambeg skin bodhrán famous. The name is associated with the large Lambeg drums called after the actual place Lambeg.
It was Rolf Wagels`own wish to use these skins for his own special „Rolf_Wagels_Edition" ("RWE") bodhrán and as a result we make this special series exclusively for him using these skins. These models are only available directly from him: More details available at: Rolf Wagels Website.

TWINSKIN

TwinSkin is a completely new and unique special drumhead developed by me. It is made of two or more individual skin layers. Special requests can be considered.

This has nothing to do with "double skin" or "stick together skins" or conventional laminated skins.

The remarkable thing about TS is that it feels, looks and reacts like a usual single skin.

The advantages of TwinSkin:

– Much less need of tuning as a usual single skin.

– TS can be composed of different kind of skins, for example interior DRAGONSkinvelvet and exterior DRAGONSkinspicy.

– Completely new qualities of the skin can be created. For example a soft and flexible skin with an unusual hard attack sound.

– It is possible to incorporate skin rings or patches between the drum head.

– Extremely long lifetime. Expecially for players with aggressive hand sweat, this might be a real option.

The development time of TS began in 2005, but the problem was always the lack of flexibility of the skin. More prototypes have been built in 2008 and have been improved in 2009. Since the beginning of 2010 the first playable TS drums have made their way on the stage. With the introduction of this new website on the 1st of January 2011, TS is now available for custom ordered drums.

More information about this topic will be available later this year.

If you are seriously interested in a TS drum please send me an Email. In the year of introducion 2011 I offer special rates for TS. Finally, I have to get more practical experience now ;o)

FAQ

"Oh, there is a hole in my drumskin !"
Naturally we try to avoid any possible weaknesses or flaws in the skin when sorting and selecting.
We have already mentioned that there are no flaws in our skins such as runs or ladders, However, since we are dealing here with very valuable raw materials it is understandable that we are not in a position to discard of any skins which may be optically flawed.
So-called “pinholes”, (miniature pin-sized perforations with thick edges, scars, darker transparent or somewhat thinner patches on the skin are all natural features and should not be considered as ground for complaint.
When we use skins with such characteristics, then only because we are convinced they are perfectly in order. We urge you to trust in our experience and be assured that you are in possession of a valuable natural product with distinctive characteristics. A scarred skin is by no means a defective skin but living proof of a solid and special animal.

„What ist the lifespan of a skin ?"
This will depend on the treatment of the bodhran player. If the instrument is treated well, the skin can last of decades. This does not mean that the skin has to has to treated in a special way. It is not necessary to use oils, greases or special soaps-just keep on playing and keep the skin at normal tension. One should not loosen the skin after playing and likewise one should avoid exposing the instrument to sun rays in a car at high tension. Time and experience will help the player to look after the instrument properly.
I recommend using Camelia oil to clean the outer skin. This is a vegetable, acid-free oil available at any chemist`s.
I would however recommend a so-called „SkinReset" after a prolonged playing period. This can be done by an experienced player but I also offer this service at my workshop. This involves removing the tape, detuning and relaxing the skin. The skin is then watered, dried slowly, retaped, sanded and smoothed inside using a 600 gr. sanding paper. This procedure served to retighten the skin and it is once again homogeneous in sound. This is especially useful with players who tend to hit the skin continuously at the same place causing an imbalance in vibration through time. A „SkinReset" is helpful here and works wonders.
Caution is advised when playing in new skins as some skins have a tendency to stretch. Therefore for reasons mentioned above, it is not advisable to loosen the skin completely after playing. Instead, it should simply be left at normal tension. Otherwise, it could happen that the skin tightens after a time even when the tuning system is completely loose.
Another area to watch out for is he possibility of skin wear. In particular, player who play at high tension may detect that the space between the lower point of the adjusters and the tuning rim may become bigger in time. In some cases, there is even a gap between the tuning rim and the main rim. This will be different from skin to skin. Some skins do not shown any signs of wear , some show slight signs of wear at the start, then subsequently no further wear takes place while other skins tend to wear down through the years. This is absolutely normal with natural skins and is no cause for concern. This will not have a negative influence on the overall sound. In addition, my HighEndLine bodhráns offer the possibility to have the intermediate rim replaced. In this way, the visible gap disappears and the instrument will look like new again.

Basically one can condense all instructions on how to care for your instrument into a few simple words. Handle your instrument with care and treat it as a fried with respect. Then you will have many years of fun and enjoyment . Familiarize yourself with all the characteristics and peculiarities of your instrument and apply them to optimum effect when playing.
During my lifetime as a bodhran player I have never heard a truer saying than the following:

“It`s not the player who chooses the drum, but the drum that chooses the player”

Philosophy

Written by

I’ve been actively involved in the bodhrán scene since 1999, starting out as a bodhrán player and listener, and as a full-time bodhrán maker since 2002.

It’s fair to say that I was able to see and contribute to an exciting and eventful part of bodhrán history.

At the time I started making bodhráns, tunable and taped bodhráns were anything but common, whereas cross bars were quite popular.

The first few years of my bodhrán making can certainly be described as years of “storm and stress”:)
I just had to test and try out everything. Triangular, heart-shaped or oval drums, I built them all, and neither the veneer nor the varnish could be unusual enough. Extra small or extra deep drums - I joined every trend. I developed tuning systems, adopted them, modified, ditched, improved, reworked them, and changed them again. I advertised in magazines, on websites, and even on the radio.
Not every hype made sense, not all ideas were great, not all campaigns were welcome, and not all attempts were successful. However, all these were valuable experiences, not just for me.

The most important realization after the stormy first years was that you shouldn’t necessarily do everything just because you can ;)

However, there are things that have proven to be reasonable, precious, stable and promising. All of these, I’ve refined, examined in detail, questioned and redesigned, or left them just as they were.In cooperation with top musicians, I developed finely tuned instruments, SignatureLines, series-production models and special editions.I made countless custom-made drums and developed my own skin holding system. In 2014, I carried out extensive frequency analyses using the ChangeHED and widely varied tuning frames at a university.  More than 5000 Hedwitschak drums have found their way to all parts of the world. I assume those were the years of reflection, specialization and realization ;)

And what is the philosophy behind my products today?

Many aspects have run like a thread through my work, and so values like

  • maintaining long-standing business relationships
  • responsible and sustainable use of resources and the environment
  • using as many local resources as possible
  • reasonable material selection
  • using material of the highest quality
  • fair and realistic prices
  • cooperation with experts
  • quality assurance for products and service
  • research, expert knowledge, experience and development

still are and will remain a top priority.

I make instruments with the greatest conceivable passion and enthusiasm.

Why? It’s simple:

Working time = life time.

And life is finite, which makes the time we have infinitely valuable.
That’s why I want to make the best use of this time, and create precious and beautiful things.
Things that other people will enjoy just as much as I did making them.
That’s how real, permanent values are created.
Whether it’s CoreLine, SignatureLines, special editions or a complete custom-made drum – my philosophy and my passion can be found in each detail and in every minute I spent working on a product.

I’ll be happy to share these values with you! :)

Christian Hedwitschak

Workshop / Production

Written by

The basis for the manufacture of new drums is the constant analysis and review of existing instruments. The mastery of basics is the fundament of new drum developments. Therefore regulary frequency analyses and comparison tests are an important part of my drum production, as well as self-made tools and special devices.

Here you can see a few photos of our great studio comparison test where all of my drums have been analyzed and tested. Exact frequency analyses have been made of all of them. Jürgen Treyz in his sound recording studio (artes records), Rolf Wagels in the recording room.

He is one of the big innovators and is always seeking how to improve the bodhran into an ultra modern drum. He uses the latest materials in shell design to keep ahead of other makers. His ideas have had great influence on the bodhran as we now know it....an instrument equal in prestige to any other musical instrument.

– Seamus O´Kane

I´ve been playing bodhráns now for over 35 years but these are the best and most professional bodhráns I have ever seen and played. The DRAGONSkin is gorgeous !

– Johnny "Ringo" McDonagh

I've been relying on Christian's Bodhráns, both on stage and in the studio, for the past few years and they've never let me down. His attention to detail is incredible and he continually pushes forward his drum making with new and innovative ideas.
The 'Dragonskin' allows me to get all the sounds I want, without all the effort. From a really rich low end to bright snappy highs, it gives me the ability to express myself without compromise.

– Martin O´Neill

Christian's Bodhrans have allowed me to perfect my own bottom end bodhran style; the dragon skin which i love to play, gives me plenty of dense lower tones, with clear, soft,  bass notes that help drive a session with the slightest of touches. He strives to provide drums for all levels and bodhran styles with many of my Bodhran students commenting on how efficient and accomodating Christian has been when ordering. It is clear to see the level of thought and skill that has gone into the production of all Christian's Bodhrans.  His drums are easy to use, reliable, and gorgeous to look at!!!

– Siobhán O´Donnell

Christian has been making lovely bodhrans with a rich and subtle sound for over ten years now.
The drums he made for me have a warm velvety tone - deep and bassy suitable for my bottom end playing.
He is constantly striving for excellence in his craftsmanship - absorbing and developing new ideas in bodhran-making.

– Jim Higgins

Christian had become one of the most important bodhrán makers in the world today, supplying some of the world’s best players. The innovation of design and attention to detail in his bodhráns is outstanding. I was delighted with the results when I tried out the TrHed Model.  I favour the traditional style drums and the 18” TrHed model is Christian’s answer to a traditional style bodhrán, using a ‘standard’ goat skin. It’s got rich, deep bass tones and beautiful high-mid and top end tones. It is extremely responsive, and projects very well, something a lot of bodhráns fail to do these days! The added bonus is the unique hand-tuning system which significantly speeds things up on stage and in the studio. I would recommend Christian’s bodhráns to players of all levels.

– Cormac Byrne

I have been playing Christians drums for several years now. My Hedwitschak gives me the perfect balance between warm, bassy low tones to clear and crisp highs. Christians drums are meticulously crafted and are yet robust enough to take a good beating! 10/10

– Eamon Murray

Christian, a master of his profession, has led the way in the development of the Irish frame drum over the last decade. His love for the craft is evident from the innovative designs where he strives to produce the best possible tonal qualities. I love the rich, rounded bass which adds great support and blends well with other instruments. The clear mid-range of the dragon skin spicy offers optimal pitching possibilities for the player. There is a drum to complement every playing style which will take you from the session to the stage!

Aimeée Farrell-Courtney   (World Bodhrán Champion 2010)

Christian's drums have  such a unique warm , clear  and fluid sound .The first time I played one I knew I HAD to get one . I was truly shocked by the range of tones I got from it , instantly
I can use his drums for punchy  bass lines or I can get clear arpeggios ...
I can play single stick ,  double stick  or handstyle or tune it accurately  to give me a precise pitch, great for working with singers for a Drone drum effect.
I do a lot of teaching recording and live work  and people always ask me How do I get THAT sound.. I tell them ...Buy this drum!
– Steafan Hannigan

Christian is a master of his craft and art! The drum that he has made for me has perfect, round tone with the perfect attack!
As a maker christian is very easy to work and talk with, he understands what the drummer wants! Constantly changing and making his drums better!
They are very reliable drums, not matter where u are!
We need more like him! :)
– Kieran Munnelly

I only use one bodhrán on stage with 'Frankie Gavin & De Dannan' and that is the RWE bodhrán made by Christian Hedwitschak. It is simply a terrific instrument and it doesn't surprise me that after every gig I did in the USA recently I was asked all the time who made my drum. It has a bass end Steve Gadd would be happy with and a top end Zakir Hussain would take delight in. There is a great feeling knowing that night after night I spend minimal time sound checking as the drum has all the natural tones inbuilt and available instantly.
– Eric Cunningham

I have been working together with Christian Hedwitschak for many years now and I am continually impressed by his professional approach to bodhran making. Together we developed the RWE signature bodhran and the resulting product is simply the best drum I have ever played. Whether in a concert or session environment, the drum delivers everything I need with a fast left hand response and an unbelievable tonal range. As well as producing high-end drums, Christian also offers a variety of drums within a great price range. As a teacher and re-seller I have always been impressed with the quality and consistency of the complete range of drums and would happily play any of them on stage. In over six years of retail for Christian I did not give a single drum back. Thanks to Christian and his unique combination of innovation and hard work, bodhran players all over the world have the chance to sound great even on the lower priced instruments. The quality of his products has contributed greatly to the resurgence in popularity that the bodhran has enjoyed over the last few years.
– Rolf Wagels

I have been playing Christian's Bodhráns for the last few years and they really capture exactly what I look for in a drum.
Every musician I play with always comments on the warm and inoffensive sounds that they produce along with their sleek and professional look.
My favourite drumhead is the Dragonskin 'spicy', this in my opinion is the ideal giging skin, as it will let you raise the atmosphere of the music or bring it right down to something more soft and subtle.
This skin provides me with a percussive top-end sound but also with a warm and rich bass that enables my playing to pick out chord progressions and lower notes.
The frames and tuning systems themselves are second to none in terms of reliabilty and look. Christian also provides an excellent service to his customers - all around a truly brilliant Bodhrán maker!
– Dermot Sheedy

I have been playing Christians Bodhrans for a number of years now, the attention to detail, the consistency and the sheer quality of his drums means that not only is there great comfort in the knowledge that the Bodhran you receive will be of the highest possible standard, but also that every detail has been engineered to maximize your sound and performance. The clarity of the sound from the skins, amplified or even in a session means you are not just "beating the goat" you can actually play the instrument!!
– Dominic Keogh.

It's not just the finish of Christian Hedwitschak's  Bodhráns that make them stand apart from the crowd. Every drum he makes is beautifully crafted.
The 'Dragonskins' he has developed offer me an incredible range of sounds, from the amazing top end high to the thunderous bass end.
This gives me so much confidence as a player and can only help to improve one's play no matter what level you are at.
Christian is at the cutting edge of Bodhrán design and he will build you a drum that you just wont be able to put down.
If you're looking to buy a Bodhrán then look no further...Christians drums are without a doubt, the best you will find!
– Mark Davies - (Emma & The Professor)

Throughout my career I have been searching for the "perfect" Bodhrán. It was not until I came across Christian Hedwitschak, that I was able to find a Bodhrán that perfectly complemented my style, technique and self expression through the instrument. It is no easy feat to create a highly responsive Bodhrán skin, matched with a superbly crafted shell.  Christian has not only mastered this, but has applied a form of art and craftsmanship that we have never seen in the Bodhrán world.  Staggeringly beautiful woodwork, veneers and finishes add a unique look and unmatched quality to his Bodhráns. My Christian Hedwitschak Bodhrán never lets me down, producing the utmost clarity of sound, complete tonal range from deep lows, to clear and crisp highs. I continue to gain more and more respect for Christians abilities, and very much look forward to future Bodhráns!
– Jacob McCauley

Christians drums are an invention of pure perfection!! His drums are by far the nicest sounding highest quality built drums I have ever played. The skin tones sound like nothing I've heard before, from sub bass to sizzling top end, Its entire drumkit in one drum. He keeps pushing the boundaries of bodhran making. I own 3 of his drums and want more :-)
– Brian Hanlon

Since we first began working with Christian in 2003 I have been continually amazed with the quality he is consistently able to produce. On top of Christian's incredible workmanship and attention to detail, he has his skins - the heart of a bodhrán - figured out.  I don't know what he does to make them sound so good but I'm glad he does it!  From the silky smoothness of the DragonSkin to the slightly brighter shimmer of the DragonSkin Spicy, Christian sets the bar very high indeed with his high-end range.  Always innovative, never resting on his laurels, Christian has earned his rank as one of the worlds' finest bodhrán makers.
– Blayne Chastain
Musician & Founder of whistleanddrum.com

I am deeply impressed by the warm, voluminous sound of my dragon skin. This easy responsiveness together with a clearly defined Sound: Really a masterpiece! Christian had been introduced to the bodhrán scene by a student of mine and myself, because we already had been convinced by the quality of his work at that time. He still gets better and better. Since that time he had been a trusted and first and foremost flexible supplier of professional Bodhráns.
– Thórralf Schuh

'Unique' is the only word I can use to describe Christians drums. The care and attention put into making such an instrument is clear to be seen. The new TwinSkin is just incredible, and the sound quality and range of pitch is excellent. Not only are the drums themselves of high quality, but the personal touch that Christian adds when dealing with customers is exceptional. His customer service is brilliant and he will do everything in his power to find that perfect drum for you. I would have no hesitation in recommending any of Christians drums to fellow players. Especially the new FireBall with the fantastic TwinSkin which is a joy on the ear !
– Kieran Leonard   (Bodhrán All Ireland Champion 2011)

My MOF made by Christian Hedwitschak fits like a glove! Due to the flexible skin and short ways it's effortless to form the tones very fast. The communication between Christian and me was fast and uncomplicated. He created me a drum which matched my personal conception and ideas more then 100%. It still takes me by surprise which power comes out of this little drum!!
– Michaela Grüß (MOF-mummy)

I have played those Bavarian bodhráns for more than seven years now. Christian just got me addicted. Wonderful craftmanship combined with a perfect sound for all occasions (session / stage / studio) and easy handling simply convinced me. Hed's heads (especially the dragonskin) are second to none! More than that, Christian is a brilliant bodhrán player himself, so he understands the needs of his customers.  The creamy, smooth low end and just the right amount of  sharpness and attack of my MHTF make the best sounding drum I've ever had!
– Michael Kamp (MHTF-daddy)
